This patterned fabric captures the traditional techniques of Japanese painting and the textural quality of mineral pigments while retaining the original artwork’s essence, all infused with a uniquely ethnic and botanical atmosphere. It features an original pattern that serves as a striking accent.

◆The Japanese Painting Department at Tokyo University of the Arts was founded by Tenshin Okakura and others; it is Japan’s only national university of the arts and has produced renowned Japanese painters such as Taikan Yokoyama and Ikuo Hirayama.

◆Japanese painting, created using mineral pigments and animal glue, requires a delicate touch and technical skill. It is a technique that Japan can be proud of, one that can only be mastered by Japanese artists with their unique sensibilities and expertise.

◆The Third Japanese Painting Research Laboratory at the Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School is dedicated to mastering these traditional techniques and passing them on to future generations. They engage in daily practice through projects such as the reproduction of National Treasures and participation in the Inten exhibition.

◆To date, the laboratory has completed modern-day copies of the *Tale of Genji Emaki* (National Treasure) and the *Ban Dainagon Emaki* (National Treasure), both considered among Japan’s three great picture scrolls, and has been working on a copy of the remaining *Shigisan Engi Emaki* (National Treasure) for 11 years.

◆Only four students are selected annually from the graduate school to participate in this reproduction project. We carefully curate these supreme works of art—created by select painters who have honed their skills even further within Tokyo University of the Arts, where admission itself is considered difficult—under the supervision of the laboratory.

◆The original artwork for these exceptionally niche and rare products—created for the “Inten” competition, a platform for artists to hone their skills rather than for commercial sale—is typically only viewable in museums or galleries. By incorporating these works into daily life as wallpaper, a portion of the product sales is returned to the artists themselves. We are dedicated to product development in the hope of providing indirect support to the artists and contributing to a richer lifestyle for our customers.
